Laura Linfoot Townsend: "Port Mayaca will continue to grow"

Port Mayaca is one of the clubs with the greatest growth and projection in polo in the United States. Located in Okeechobee, Florida, it has an immense venue with 8 fields and it is one of the busiest in the US, with a very competitive winter season, with more than 10 tournaments ranging from 8 to 18 goals and between 12 and 22 goals for women. Forty big organizations have played in its tournaments this year from January to April.

To learn a little more about the club's present and the story behind it, we interview Laura Linfoot Townsend, PMPC Manager: "Port Mayaca will continue to grow. We plan for our big focal tournaments to become more prestigious. In this effort we will promote some more spectator focused matches. We have a great base of players who have bought real estate to build farms around the club and that gives us a great foundation to build on. These new farms coming on line will most definitely change the landscape and improve the club. It’s very important to us that our lot owners are the focus of the club and they will be a big part in deciding the next steps for the club."

What was the club’s feeling after the last prize giving in the high season?

We were thrilled with the 2021 season. We had more polo and better competition than we have ever had before, adding to our season with tournaments like the USPA Monty Waterbury.

Which is your feedback of the high season?

We have had great feedback from our players this year. The multiple levels of competition, from 8 to 18 goal, and the women's tournaments at 22 goals. We had a great turnout with over 20 teams each month of the high season. The fields held up well, and we were able to continue with our Member Practices three days week in addition to the tournaments. This gives all of our members and players plenty of opportunities to play!

More than 10 tournaments, all of them of different categories and a week full of activities. They are looking forward to maintaining this and adding more polo?

We are definitely planning on maintaining the level of competition and handicap. We really enjoyed hosting so many teams. With 8 tournament fields, we have plenty of room to play!

What can you tell us abbout the real state development of Mayaca?

The club is still very much in a growth mode. We have a number of new barns under construction and set to be completed for the 2022 season. We currently have just 2 lots still available.

How will continue the 2021?

Our 2021 tournament season has come to an end, but we are still practicing several times a week for members. Dutta Corp, Graymar Farm and Postage Stamp Farm are legging up horses here as well before they ship off for summer polo.

"Port Mayaca seguirá creciendo. Planeamos que nuestros grandes torneos sean más prestigiosos. En este esfuerzo promoveremos más partidos enfocados en el espectador. Tenemos una gran base de jugadores que han comprado terrenos para construir caballerizas alrededor del club y eso nos da una gran base sobre la cual avanzar. Esto definitivamente cambiarán el panorama y mejorará el club. Es muy importante para nosotros que nuestros propietarios sean el foco del club y serán una gran parte a la hora de decidir los próximos pasos". ¿Cuál fue el sentimiento tras la última entrega de premios de la temporada?

Estuvimos encantados con la temporada 2021, con más polo y un nivel de competencia que nunca habíamos tenido antes, sumando a nuestro calendario torneos como el USPA Monty Waterbury.

¿Qué les dejó la temporada alta?

Recibimos muy buenos comentarios de nuestros jugadores este año, por los múltiples niveles de competición, de 8 a 18 goles y los torneos femeninos hasta 22 goles. Tuvimos una gran participación con más de 20 equipos cada mes durante la temporada alta. Las canchas se mantuvieron bien y pudimos continuar con nuestras prácticas para los miembros del club tres días a la semana, además de los torneos. Eso les da a todos nuestros socios muchas oportunidades para jugar.

Más de 10 torneos, todos ellos de diferentes categorías y semanas llenas de actividades. ¿Están ansiosos por mantener esto y agregar más polo?

Definitivamente, estamos planeando mantener el nivel de competencia y handicap. Realmente disfrutamos recibir a tantos equipos ya que con 8 canchas tenemos mucho espacio para jugar.

¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre el desarrollo inmobiliario de Mayaca?

El club todavía está en un modo de crecimiento. Tenemos una serie de caballerizas en construcción que se completarán para la temporada 2022. Actualmente solo tenemos 2 lotes disponibles.

¿Cómo continuará el 2021?

Nuestra temporada de torneos 2021 ha llegado a su fin, pero todavía estamos con prácticas varias veces a la semana para los socios. Dutta Corp, Graymar Farm y Postage Stamp Farm también están preparando caballos aquí antes de que se embarquen para el polo veraniego.
