The Virginia United Polo League, founded by Marcos Bignoli, Juan Ghirlanda and Tolito Fernández Ocampo, with the support of Bill Balhaus and Rebekah Greenhills, is a series of tournament that are growing very quickly in Virginia, and it is comprised by an anual season that runs through June to September, for teams between 6 and 12 goals.
The League have currently several organizations playing such as Beverly Equestrian and Greenhill Stables, and it was established to unify polo in Kingland, Foxlease and Beverly, in Virginia, and it is sponsored by Greenhill, which is a "farm winery in Middleburg, Virginia. The winery got involved with polo by sponsoring the local polo events, which eventually turned into team sponsorships, and now as players", explains Rebekah, who is in charge of the marketing of the League, to Prensa Polo.
"2020 is the inaugural season for the Virginia United Polo league and we could not be happier about how the season has unfolded", states Bill Ballhaus to Prensa Polo. "The fundamental concept behind the Virginia Polo League was to put a unified approach together to polo in Virginia in order to create a better organized, more competitive, highly inclusive, and enjoyable polo experience for all Virginia players. Central to our approach was bringing together participating clubs in the area so that tournaments and practices could be organized and allocated across the different clubs in an integrated manner, as opposed to the historical fragmented approach where individual clubs organized separate tournaments with limited participation in each".
And he adds: "The level of participation in our inaugural season has been spectacular. VUP has organized polo tournaments at levels of play ranging from a 0-6 Goal Open League and 6, 8, and 12 goal competitive tournaments. In August alone, we have 25 teams competing across four different levels of play and 6 tournaments including the USPA National 8 Goal and Intra-Circuit 12 Goal Tournaments".
Bill, what is the major aim for the league? How is the Virginia Polo League composed and what are the current aims and development?
The basic goal behind the Virginia United Polo League is to develop and grow polo in Virginia. We are looking to offer an enjoyable and organized polo experience, expand the number of teams and players, offer various levels of play, and create an inclusive environment that exposes and develops new players.
It's time now to introduce Rebekah Greenhill, one of the most enthusiastic players of the league: "I live in Middleburg, Virginia in the summer, which is like a piece of the English countryside in the US with Green rolling hills, lush foliage, beautiful country estates, horses, cows, sheep. I spent the fall, winter and spring in Wellington, Florida", she explains. "Florida is the polo mecca of the equestrian world. It's quiet and peaceful, with horse crossings on the main roads, rows of palm trees, big gorgeous stables and stunning polo fields. Basically, I am a Florida resident, but I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii as a Navy child. I studied journalism, and now am the publisher of Middleburg Life magazine and oversee the marketing for Greenhill Winery & Vineyards".
How and when you started to play polo? What does polo mean to you?
I started playing polo in early 2015. I have always been obsessed with horses and love watching talented riders and their beautiful athletic equines. I had "My Little Pony" toys as a kid, had an affinity for unicorns and have been an animal lover since I can remember. I am all-in with many horses of my own, each one special and unique. It is my whole life now!
You use to play with friends most of the time. What does it mean to share this passion for you?
It is amazing to have a passion, hobby and network that involves not only something that you love, but people you love and want to spend time with. It is a close knit community here in Virginia, and the camaraderie that is built and special bond with friends is truly special, it fosters a loyalty and community that travels with you. The cool thing about polo and it being a "passport to the world" is that this passport usually means you are still with people you know and love!
What do you think is the best place to play polo?
Wellington, Florida is my favorite place to play polo! The fields are unbelievable and the amount of polo that is played there in the winter months is unmatched.
Also, I love watching the high goal in England and Dubai, but for me to play, Wellington is the best place,offering all levels of polo, plus incredible high goal games that can keep you busy every day of the week.
Speaking of Wellington, Florida, the mecca of polo, as Rebekah says, one of the major aims of the league is to land in Palm Beach. With regards to the issue, Bill says: "Absolutely, and it is already happening. Several teams from Virginia including Woodrow Farm, Dragonfly, Altair, Point-to-Point, Speedwell, Greenhill Winery, and Beverly Equestrian have competed successfully at various levels of play in Wellington for years. With the expansion of the League, and the high-level of play, we look forward to many more teams coming out of the Virginia season to compete at other locations like Aiken and Wellington".

La Virginia United Polo League, creada por Marcos Bignoli, Juan Ghirlanda, Tolito Fernández Ocampo, con el apoyo de Bill Balhaus y Rebekah Greenhills, jugadora y patrona de la liga, es una serie de torneos que vienen creciendo muchísimo en la zona de Virginia, y que se compone de una temporada que va desde junio a septiembre, para equipos de entre 6 y 12 goles de handicap.
Además, la liga ya cuenta con la participación de varias organizaciones, entre las que se cuentan Beverly Equestrian y Greenhill Stables, y fue creada con el objeto de unificar el polo en Kingland, Foxlease y Beverly, en Virginia, bajo el sponsoreo de Greenhill, "una bodega de campo en Middleburg, Virginia. La bodega se involucró con el polo, sponsoreando eventos locales y posteriormente se convirtió en sposor de equipos y ahora de jugadores”, le explica Rebekah, encargada del Marketing de la Liga, a Prensa Polo.
“Este 2020 fue la primera temporada de la Virginia United Polo League y la verdad es que no podemos estar más contentos por como se ha desarrollado la misma”, afirma Bill Ballhaus a Prensa Polo. “El concepto fundamental de la Ligua es unir al polo de Virginia para crear una experiencia mejor organizada, más competitiva, altamente inclusiva y para que la disfruten todos los jugadores de Virginia. Una de las cosas más importantes de nuestros objetivos fue traer clubes de la zona a jugar los torneos y organizar prácticas de manera que todos puedan integrarse, que es lo contrario a lo que se hizo tradicionalmente, es decir que cada club organizara sus torneos de forma separada con participación limitada en cada uno de ellos”.
Y añade: “El nivel de participación en nuestra temporada inaugural ha sido espectacular. La Liga ha organizado torneos cuyos niveles van de una liga abierta para equipos de 0 a 6 goles y torneos muy competitivos de entre 6, 8 y 12 goles. Solo en agosto, tenemos 25 equipos jugando en diferentes niveles además de seis torneos, incluyendo el USPA National 8 Goal and Intra-Circuit 12 Goal Tournaments"
Bill, cuál es el objetivo máximo de la liga? Cómo se realiza y cuáles son sus objetivos actuales y desarrollo de la misma?
El objetivo básico de la Virginia United Polo League es desarrollar y hacer crecer el polo en Virginia. Queremos ofrecer una experiencia de polo que esté bien organizada y a la vez que se sea para divertirse, hacer crecer el número de equipos y jugadores en varios niveles de juego, crear un ambiente inclusivo que sea para presentar y desarrollar nuevos jugadores.
Llegó el momento de presentar a Rebekah Greenhill, una de las más entusiastas jugadoras de la liga: “Durante el verano vivo en Middleburg, Virginia, que es un pedacito del entorno campestre inglés en los Estados Unidos, con esos paisajes verdes hermosos con vacas y ovejas, y bellísimas casas de campo. El otoño, invierno y primavera los paso en Wellington, Florida”, cuenta Rebekah, “ya que Florida es la meca del mundo ecuestre. Es un lugar muy tranquilo, donde uno ve caballos cruzando la calle, palmeras, establos muy lindos y canchas espectaculares. Básicamente, soy residente de Florida aunque nací en Honolulu, Hawaii. También estudié periodismo. Tengo una revista, Middleburg Life y superviso el área de marketing de Greenhill Winery & Vineyards”.
Cuándo y cómo empezaste a jugar al polo? Comencé a jugar al polo a principios de 2015. Siempre tuve una fascinación con los caballos y me encanta ver jinetes talentosos, apreciar su talento. Recuerdo que de chica coleccionaba los muñecos My Little Pony, me encantaban los unicornios y toda mi vida he amado a los animales. Tengo muchos caballos, y cada uno es especial y único. Son toda mi vida!
Sabemos que jugás mucho con tus amigos. Que significa compartir esta pasión con la gente que querés?
Es increíble tener una pasión, un hobby, eso que involucra lo que tanto amás hacer, y mucho más si lo podés compartir con la gente que uno ama. La comunidad de Virginia es muy unida, y se ha hecho una camaradería y un lazo de amistad entre todos que es muy especial, una lealtad y una comunidad que es única. Eso tan particular que tiene el polo, ser “el pasaporte al mundo”; ese pasaporte que por lo general significa que estás con gente que conocés y que querés!
En tu opinión, cuál es el mejor lugar para jugar al polo:
Mi lugar favorito sin dudas es Wellington, Florida.Las canchas son increíbles y hay tanto polo allá en invierno. No se compara con nada!
También me gusta ver el alto hándicap en Inglaterra y Dubai. Pero para jugar, para mi Wellington es lo mejor, porque brinda todos los niveles de polo además de partidos de alto hándicap increíbles, con lo cual uno se puede mantener ocupado cada día de la semana.
Hablando de Wellington, Florida, la meca del polo en Estados Unidos, como dice Rebekah, uno de los objetivos principales de la liga es llegar a aterrizar algún día en Palm Beach. Al respecto, dice Bill: “Absolutamente, y ya está sucediendo. Muchos equipos de Virginia, incluyendo a Woodrow Farm, Dragonfly, Altair, Point-to-Point, Speedwell, Greenhill Winery, y Beverly Equestrian han competido durante años y con mucho éxito en varios niveles allá en Wellington. Ahora, con la expansión de la liga, y el alto nivel de juego, estamos muy entusiasmados con la idea de tener muchos más equipos que juegan la temporada en Virginia en lugares como Aiken y Wellington”.
